Directed by Rick Roman Vaugh not for the first time to shoot criminal dramas about judicial and executive systems. In 2012, he was already producing quite the same high-quality and atmospheric work with Dwayne Johnson in the title role. The essence of the work was that an individual was simply unable to fight the huge and untwisted flywheel of the judicial system. This time, Roman Vaughn decided to reflect on the fate of a man who has already been convicted, but at the same time, he is not at all a kind of a criminal. In my opinion, the director gave out a very worthy story this time, albeit with minor reservations.

The plot of the picture will introduce the viewer to the office worker - Jacob. He is a very successful family man who has a wonderful job, a wonderful wife and of course a big house. All this disappears overnight, after Jacob falls into a terrible accident and becomes its culprit. The hero is sent to the bunk, and already there his life has time to change just radically. In the harsh prison routine Jacob is not corny to survive and he has to exist under the laws of prison, these are very strict laws that change him forever.

The creators of the work very competently thought out the local way of narration. We are told and shown several storylines and they all relate to the life of the protagonist. In the first line, we can observe how the life of Jacob broke down and who he became after serving time. The second line shows a kind of prehistory and motives that made Jacob choose the path of total crime. The work has a very smooth narrative, which is superimposed on its very essential atmospheric. In my opinion, all the episodes in prison are generally the best that is in the film. The director knows his business and quite competently shows the viewer all the severity of prison customs and practices. But here moments "at will" turned out somewhat faded and completely banal. Honestly, every time I waited for the next episodes in prison and, in my opinion, it would be better to concentrate completely on them. But it is obvious that the director did not want to see this vision and concentrate the whole film on the prison entirely. Nikolai Koster-Waldau is definitely good in his role, although the style of a mustached Latino is not enough for him. Initially, you are perplexed about his reincarnation as a criminal, for it looks a bit strange, but in the course of the story the creators still manage to convince the viewer of this. On the other hand, the motivation of Jacob's character in itself may appear ambiguous in some moments, and the events are too far-fetched, but in principle all this can be accepted.

As a result - "Shot in the void" is a very good and colorful crime drama. This is clearly not the best that there is and can be in the genre, but the work turned out sound and looks with genuine interest. And there probably is not much more to it. Yes, the work has some blunders, but I think that no one initially and did not expect an unconditional masterpiece. And Roman Vos himself just wanted to tell the next story about the zeks and did it at a quite good level.
